Vegoritida Lake: An Ecosystem with History, Challenges, and Beauty
Vegoritida: Ecosystem and Tourism
-Vegoritida Lake is one of the largest and most well-known lakes in Northern Greece, with significant ecological and cultural importance. It is located on the borders of the Prefectures of Pella and Florina, near the towns of Edessa, Arnissa, and Amyntaio.
-It is situated at an altitude of approximately 540 meters and is considered one of the deepest lakes in Greece. In the past, it did not exceed 70 m, but today it is estimated to be around 40 m due to the drop in water level. Its area is estimated at about 45 km² (taking into account seasonal variations).
-The lake, being a natural landscape, is an area of particular ecological importance. One could say that it has its own ecosystem, as it hosts rare bird species such as grebes, herons, pelicans, and cormorants. Also, a variety of aquatic plants and rich ichthyofauna (carp, sheatfish, tench, trout) are observed in this natural area. It has been part of the Natura 2000 network since the late 1990s.
-The historical – social context of the lake has been shaped by a series of events, the result of both natural and historical phenomena. In antiquity, it was known as Ascanía, and Neolithic settlements and findings from Roman and Byzantine times have been discovered in the area. The lake's water level used to be much higher, and its surface area was almost double.
-The modern issues concerning this natural landscape relate to environmental matters. It is known that it has been facing a significant drop in water level since the mid-20th century due to water pumping for industrial, agricultural use, and energy production. The result of these actions is the environmental pressures the lake is currently facing, such as pollution, over-pumping, and the risk of biodiversity loss. Of course, efforts are being made for restoration and protection through ecotourism actions, environmental education, and sustainable management programs.
-The activities offered in this landscape give its visitors the opportunity to become one with nature. Activities include observing the rare bird species hosted there, photography of the lake and the surrounding vegetation, hiking, and cycling routes around the lake. Furthermore, in the nearby areas, one can find traditional tavernas on the banks, focusing on freshwater fish.
